PostPosted: Fri 15:05, 19 Nov 2010    Post subject: two weeks in a row.

His teammates came up with one description: dubbing him “Mariano Rivera,” after the Yankees’ legendary closer.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is both thoughtful and reflective, but he still struggles to put into words the feeling of having the clinching turnover in his hands — two weeks in a row.
His fumble recovery against the Broncos came on the only defensive snap he played all game.
“You’ve got all these guys in the locker room in anticipation of someone making a play,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “To be able to do it — for these guys, for myself — you can’t describe it.”
“When you put your work in, you’re going to get opportunities. I’ve had opportunities, and I feel like I’m going to have opportunities in the future.”
Perhaps the best description for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other than closer, is what Thurman suggests: “specialist.” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with a handful of other defensive players, has a defined but critical set of responsibilities in each week’s game plan as the Jets seek to take advantage of what he does well. Among [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’s strengths: blitzing, ball skills and playmaking.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] agrees. But he said, at some point, he will need to dictate what he wants to do with his career. And he thinks his future will be at safety, based on his skill-set and his penchant for weight training. He is playing about five pounds heavier than last season — between 198 and 200 pounds — and said he is also stronger and more explosive.
The former fourth-round pick is a legitimate team-first guy, though, the same player who suggested Kyle Wilson take his first-team reps in training camp during Revis’ absence, so the rookie could get up to speed faster.
“Right now he’s kind of a nomad; he doesn’t have a home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Thurman said of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. “I would assume he would not want this to be the way his career ends. But it’s the best way to take advantage of his skill-set right now.”
The Jets defensive back did say the plane ride home from Denver last Sunday was pretty great, though.
Dick Tomey, his coach at San Jose State, knows as well as anyone how well-suited [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is for the job. Tomey said [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] elevated the way the other Spartan players studied the game, with a “dead serious” approach that should aid his mastery of his many tasks in the Jets defense.
Thurman admitted it’s probably “unsettling” at times for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who started 10 games at cornerback as a rookie in 2008.
“Sometimes I do get frustrated,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “You want to be on the field because you feel like you can make plays; you feel like you can make things happen. But at the same time, you have to understand the grand scheme of things.
But that’s in the future, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. For now, he’s focused on these next 10 games and on continuing to maximize each snap he gets.
Jets defensive back [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] making good on expectation he'll deliver big plays
Tomey also said [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had a knack for the ball then as well, tying for the nation’s lead with nine interceptions as a junior.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’s two game-sealing plays?
The third-year player has maintained an expectation that he will deliver big plays for the 5-1 Jets — despite his role and playing time changing year to year, and even week to week.
In the past two games, when he secured both of his turnovers, he was used mainly in packages with seven defensive backs. He played a dozen snaps against Minnesota, by an unofficial count, including the Vikings’ last-chance drive as the game expired.
And his pick-six of Brett Favre the previous week occurred on only his fourth defensive play of the night (both by unofficial count).
Even [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has trouble identifying himself, particularly in a season when the Jets’ defensive backfield lineup has been in flux. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said he was used as a safety the first two games. But when Darrelle Revis injured a hamstring in Week 2 against the Patriots, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had to be ready to play cornerback and know the nickel and dime responsibilities.
“It’s just that we don’t want to use him in one way,” Jets secondary coach Dennis Thurman explained. “His versatility is a strength for us, because how do you identify him?”
“That’s what makes this defense work, guys like him,” safety Jim Leonhard said. “You can’t really lock him down to a position. He’s at his best when he has kind of free rein and gets to do a lot of different things.”
But the combination of a fluctuating role and limited playing time can be tough for any player.
In the offseason, the coaches explained to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the job they envisioned for him as a hybrid defensive back — though Revis’ holdout and injury affected their plans somewhat.
