The 49ers run a lot of plays through Gore, but Gore is also an easy check-down option for Alex Smith. One problem early in the season has been Smith's proclivity to dump down to Gore a little too quickly. We saw a possible example of this against the Raiders in the second quarter. The 49ers had a 3rd and 4 on the Raiders 7 with 15 second left in the half.
